First we will start with the Trabant 601s, the "volkswagen" (people’s car) of the east. Produced in VEB Sachsenring, Zwickau, East Germany between 1963–1990 it became the most iconic car of the Warsaw pact, on par with cars such as the beetle and mini in the west. It is remembered by many in the west from scenes of people driving them in to West Germany during the fall of the Berlin wall and by people in the east for the clouds of white smoke and the popping sound its 2 cylinder, 2 stroke, half liter engine made.
The Trabant sadly never made it in to the Soviet Union, but everyone knows the most legendary Soviet car ever made, the Lada 1200, produced on Taviana as the TMZ 1200 by the Tavianskiy Mashinostroitelniy Zavod (Taviana Machine Works). Many don’t know but this legendary vehicle is actually the Italian Fiat 124 manufactured in the Soviet Union under license.
Another people’s car is the ZAZ-968 produced in Zaporozhie Ukraine (produced as the TMZ 968 on Taviana).
And lastly the legendary ZIL 130 (produced as TMZ 130 on Taviana). This legendary truck came in every possible variation from flat bed, to crane to box back to cistern.
