The name 'Bilgrad Na Moru' translates to, "there was a castle by the sea" due to an old fortress that was constructed on the site of the city in the year 1070 by King Lev to keep the Vikings out. The fort was destroyed by a fire in 1240 following King Haakon IV of Norway’s unsuccessful attempt to conquer the islands. Only fragments of the fortress’ walls remain standing to this day.
